About Wat Phadung Tham Phothi
Wat Phadung Tham Phothi was constructed a few decades ago, but unfortunately, the old community hall and Ubosot have suffered significant damage and are currently unfurnished. The recently built Big Buddha statue symbolizes renewed hope for the repair and restoration of the sacred site. Most Myanmar migrant communities choose this temple for ordination, merit and donations.
Architectural Features
The fence surrounding the Wat Phadung Tham Phothi complex is something worth mentioning. The entire front is designed as elephants coming out of lotus flowers with cement sculptures on the wall; an ancient temple architectural style giving it a touch of elegance.
Wat Phadung Tham Phothi complex is a large avenue, containing two community halls, Ubosot (ordination hall), and a monastery. The Ubosot, sadly, appears to be poorly maintained and has not been used for quite some time. The monastery is a three-storey building, hosting both Thai and Myanmar monk communities. There are a lot of big Banyan trees making the complex a shady and tranquil location. In the middle of the temple’s platform area sits a medium-sized golden-seated Buddha on the altar. There is also another seated golden Buddha statue in the religious community hall.
Towards the rear of the complex sits the renowned 7m high white cement seated Big Buddha statue adorned with a golden robe. The imposing presence of the Big Buddha in the temple’s shade evokes a sense of mystique and wonder.
There are also donation and praying counters. Make sure you make a wish at the counter according to your birthday (Sunday to Monday).
Religious significance
Wat Phadung Tham Phothi serves as a significant temple where most of the Myanmar migrant community come together to celebrate their good deeds such as ordinations, weddings, birthdays and funerals, on its sacred grounds.
Final word
Wat Phadung Tham Phothi, though in a ruined state, is definitely worth a visit if you want to explore ancient temple architecture and the local religious community.
