Location
Wat Lak Kaen is a Buddhist temple in the Lam Kaen area, south of Khao Lak. On the way to Phuket, just on the left, you will be greeted by a majestic entrance gate, welcoming to the temple.Â
Architectural Features
As you enter through the gate, on your sides are a walkway and parking areas. There, you will get to the heart of Wat Lak Kaen called Ubosot, which is the holiest building in a temple complex and is the place where new priests or monks are ordained. Having suffered damage from the 2004 tsunami, it was rebuilt in 2007, structured as a building with a three-tiered roof, symbolising three Buddhist principles, lined by red tiles resembling the scales of the serpent that guarded Buddha during meditation.
Spiritual Significance
As you walk to the left side of the Ubosot, there is an altar with a seated golden Buddha radiating an aura of tranquillity. In addition to the Buddhist symbolism, Wat Lak Kaen also features a Guanyin statue and sacred statues reflecting animistic beliefs, enriching the spiritual atmosphere of the sanctuary. It is said that nine sacred stones were buried beneath the temple grounds for spiritual protection and blessings.Â
Furthermore, the monastery nestled within the temple complex provides residence for monks, who engage in community religious activities. The monastery buildings, characterized by their white walls, gold trim, and vibrant red roofs, serve as focal points for communal worship and spiritual gatherings. It hosts around 20 monks who serve the Lam Kaen Community.Â
