About
Buddhism in Khao Lak is a mix of Thai and Chinese, differing in Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism. Guanyin Chinese Buddhist temple features statues of folk beliefs and practices of Taoism and animism, revealing a connection between the realms of heaven and earthlings.
Guanyin Temple features a 5m high white cement Guanyin Statue guarded by a golden dragon wrapped around her, a tiger and a golden dragon turtle.
Beside the Guanyin Statue is a shrine where prayers are made and religious activities are held. The entrance of the shrine is guarded by two dragons. The inside of the shrine boasts small Buddha statues and warrior statues such as the famous Guan Yu. The ceiling is filled with red lamps and the columns are painted red with a dragon wrapped around them, creating a mesmerising sight. There is an incense burner where you can burn your chant paper or incense candles to say prayers.
Religious significance
Guanyin temple is the only Chinese Buddhist temple in the La On area. Thus, many local Chinese Buddhists visit the temple to do merit, pay homage and say prayers.
When to visit Guanyin Temple
The fact that it is a Chinese temple, it is obvious that you should visit during Chinese New Year if you want to experience the local culture. If you are in Khao Lak during the Vegetarian Festival which falls in September or October, you might see a full week of parades, firecrackers, firewalking and vegetarian food. You may see some men participating in the parade with piercings on their tongue or cheek or self-mutilation similar to the practices in Hinduism; the ritual of soul cleansing and self-discipline.
Final Words
Guanyin Temple is a beautiful small temple, reflecting and offering a glimpse into local life. If you are on the way to Nang Thong Beach, give it a visit for an authentic cultural experience.
